FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

  1. WHAT IS A SPUMANTE?

SPUMANTE is a wine characterized by significant effervescence, due to dissolved carbon dioxide.

The term “SPUMANTE” refers to the development of the typical foam, which is a manifestation of effervescence. SPUMANTE is a special wine, like fortified and flavored wines.

SPUMANTE wine belongs to the category of sparkling wine, which also includes semi-sparkling wine, which should not be confused with SPUMANTE and vice versa (semi-sparkling wine is not a special wine).

The difference between the two is the lower effervescence of sparkling wine compared to SPUMANTE (given the lower overpressure and the lower amount of dissolved carbon dioxide).

According to the definitions of the European Union, when opening the bottle of VSQ (Quality SPUMANTE) the product inside must have an overpressure of not less than 3.5 bar at an ambient temperature of 20 °C, for “generic” SPUMANTE (VS) it must have a minimum of 3 bars, as well as for a VSQA (Aromatic SPUMANTE).

  1. WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN “SPUMANTE” AND CHAMPAGNE?

The generic term “SPUMANTE” designates (in relation to the production process and the consequent product category) a vast overall type of wine, defined by law.

This type is made up of many different products.

Although the terms “spumante” and “champagne” are sometimes used to define distinct products, champagne, a particular French PDO, is in fact a specific “SPUMANTE” wine (certainly the most famous and renowned in the world).

Consequently, using the two terms in a phrase such as “SPUMANTE and champagne” would be equivalent to saying “blue cheese (with mold) and gorgonzola”.

  1. WHAT IS A “SPUMANTE ROSE”?

Spumante rosé is produced using black berried grapes processed in order to obtain juice in quick contact with the skins (maceration of crushed grapes or pressed grapes), from about 2 hours (typical of processing in the press) up to about 36 hours (typical of maceration of destemmed-crushed grapes).

In this way, the skins give only part of the color to the must.

Rosé SPUMANTE has a colour between pale pink, cherry and claret (i.e. pale ruby).

  1. WHAT DOES SPUMANTE’ BRUT MEAN?

Brut is a designation for a SPUMANTE’ in this case dry.

The term is protected by law.

After disgorgement, the sparkling wine is sweetened with sugar or cane sugar dissolved in the liqueur d’expédition.

This dosage is expressed in grams of sugar per liter.

The Brut indicates a dosage of less than 12 grams per liter.

The law also prescribes what the proportions between the types of flavouring and the dosages must be:

Brut, a fairly dry ‘SPUMANTE’ with a dosage of between 6 and 12 grams per liter.

Extra Sec, with a dosage of less than 20 and more than 12 grams per liter.

Sec, with a dosage of less than 35 and more than 17 grams per liter.

Demi-Sec, with a dosage of less than 50 and more than 35 grams per liter.

Doux, a sweet ‘SPUMANTE’ with a dosage of over 50 grams per liter.
